I thought I hadn't watched "The Brood," but my records state otherwise :o Must have blacked out on it like I had with "Possession" LOL.
The only one I do remember seeing from Cronenberg is "Scanners" with its exploding heads :o Though I've apparently also watched "Rabid" (which I vaguely remember) and "Spider." I remember absolutely nothing of "The Brood," not even after reading your review--cool stuff, by the way!
Cronenberg's films kind of scare me, to be honest, and I'm amazed I've seen so much of his work. Then again, that's probably why I avoid him now, ha! Though I did like "The Dead Zone," but that one doesn't really count seeing as how different it is from his usual stuff.
Thanks for your kind words on my essay. Don't be too quick to characterize Cronenberg as the 'icky body horror guy', though of course that's what he made his name as. Apart from "The Dead Zone", there's a whole slew of movies, particularly those with Viggo Mortensen, that are far outside that genre. Both "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promise" are among the best crime thrillers around, while "A Dangerous Method" is a very weird melodrama about the history of psychoanalysis.
And now we have his son Brandon who's picked up the mantle with "Possessor" and "Infinity Pool", though his dad is still far from retired at 81 years old.
I think it's one of the great unrestrained monsters of cinema, a fascinating indulgence in actual madness.
I wrote a review of it recently in comparison with Cronenberg's The Brood, with which it shares some similarities

But it has to be said that Żuławski takes the prize in the fevered imagining of maternal horror stakes.
Great review, very interesting insights.

I suspected as much, but thanks for pointing out some titles. I will definitely look into those--I love a good thriller ;)
This movie is so bananas. I just rewatched it last week. I forgot the true insanity of this film.
This is true. It is quite insane 🤪
